We were lucky enough to be invited by Sophie Osborne aka Indie and Pop to co-host a gathering of mums mid-weaning adventure for a Piccolo Pop In.
Now excellent packaging aside Piccolo are all about the Mediterranean goodness. What caught my eye were the flavours, the spring greens I even want to eat, and the use of chick peas – as a non-meat house we are always looking for ways to pack the veggie protein so this was very exciting to discover their red pepper chickpea and squash flavour. Still a new brand these guys are now storming the supermarkets, recently securing a listing in ASDA as well as all the other big guns. Good, honest and natural food, we’re delighted the team decided to spread these principles direct to mums with weaning workshops aka #PiccoloPopIns.
We chose NOVI as one of our favourite baby-friendly spots, plenty of space and the best baby change table you’ll find in Cambridge. Plus we could grab an excellent coffee or herbal tea while we chatted. Alice Fotheringham co-founder and nutritional therapist joined us early and got to work in the kitchen boiling peas for our pea hummus, Emily also joined us from the team, a dietician, so we were really in store for some powerful nutrition advice! Each attendee got a goody bag plus notes on flavour combinations for weaning based around herbs, and all the recipes we were going to make that day.
Wow did we make some good food! First up we made vegan porridge fingers, and a savoury flapjack (Alice had kindly researched the dietary requirements of the group and tweaked so we could all enjoy the cooking). Next we whipped up pea hummus, a mackerel spread and a cannellini bean dip. Finally were the tortilla pizzas – the kids really loved getting involved in these. I loved the porridge fingers as they only require four ingredients, you can make them in the microwave in 4 minutes and they last around a week in the fridge (lazy parenting win). I’m also definitely making the dairy free mackerel pate for myself let alone the kids!
Piccolo are launching new exciting flavours and products all the time, their latest being a line of veg only pouches (a massive need in our opinion!), even more flavours (no surprise I’m loving the beetroot) and stage two pouches. You can find them in Waitrose, ASDA, Planet Organic, Ocado, Booths, Abel & Cole, WholeFoods and more. A huge thanks to Alice and Emily for taking the time to spend a wonderful couple of hours with us and NOVI for hosting us. Thanks also to our CamMama’s Sian, Sarah and her Piccolo Autumn, Amy and her Piccolo Harriet, Abi with Piccolo’s Seth and Rose and of course Sophie and the delightful Piccolo Poppy.
