Review: Beefeater Travellers Rest

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: we have children, we visit chain restaurants. We know this concerns some but for us, it is just part of life. When child free we go local, we support local and we would chose to eat in the newest indie every day of the week. But sometimes, when we eat out with children, we want somewhere with lots of other kids, with drawing packs and ice cream sundae stations to keep them happy.

So, having not been to a Beefeater for quite sometime, we tried the Beefeater on Huntingdon Road. It’s recently been done up and promised ‘a fresh look inside and out, with booth seating/modern interior and new look bar.’ We were intrigued…

And I am happy to report that we had the most pleasant time. The food was generally good – great in places and the staff there were so friendly that we almost felt we could leave the kids chatting with them while we ate!

The fresher look was evident in places, not so much in others, but overall it felt funkier that I remember.

The new look interior

Fish Trio: A trio of fish ‘n’ chip croquette, smoked haddock & Cheddar fishcake and cod & crab bite. All served on a bed of mushy peas and mint mayo
Kids menu Steak and Chips

The menu is full of classic family food – at a great price too. We kicked things off with the Fish Trio from their new Great Taste of Britain menu and loved the dish. The smoked haddock and cheddar fishcake in particular was impressive. The kids went for nachos and veggie sticks and they kept them suitably entertained while they coloured in their menus. Result.

Main courses were mainly a hit – Tilly’s steak and chips was just perfect for her and she devoured it all in minutes and then begged mouthful of mine. And I couldn’t blame her – my Beef Rib Wellington was the star dish of our evening by some way. This was high-end gastro pub style and I can’t believe I have never eaten it before. The beef fell off the bone and the pastry was fluffy and buttery. The vegetables it sat on were a little bland but that didn’t matter much – the Wellington was stand-up sensational.

Pete’s fish and chips were a little more standard  – the batter could certainly have been lighter and less greasy but he loved it nonetheless.

Beef Rib Wellington: Slow cooked short rib of beef encased in puff pastry. Served on a bed of mixed greens, potatoes and a rich malbec sauce
Ice cream sundae heaven

Puddings came as a great surprise for the girls – making their own sundae faces had them giggling and happy so we could enjoy a coffee and share a banoffee pie – a little heavy on the toffee sauce – so we were happy all round.

Banoffee Pie

We enjoyed a great family meal and have decided when it comes to a well-priced, family-friendly meal – we will be back.
