Steak & Honour and Jack’s Gelato at EAT Cambridge

Posh school dinners was the theme for our first EAT Cambridge event. Hosted at Fitzbillies, a BWC fave, Steak & honour and Jack’s Gelato once again teamed up for the opening dinner.

We went for the 9pm sitting allowing time for a few pints of Camden at the Flying Pig and pool before hand. We went with Chris and Alex White of We three club and Dear so and so (who also designed the awesome menu).

On arrival you got tuck shop bags full of tasty seeds and salt and vinegar pork scratchings. The beer was Coopers original pale ale, which I hadn’t had before and highly recommend. The starter which aside from the slightly nasty plastic container, was a perfectly dippy egg, posh bread sticks, asparagus and anchovy. It was fresh, tasty and good!

The main meal was on fun school dinner plates and featured posh mash, peas and a delicious chicken and morel breaded wonder. This was the highlight for me, bang on theme and delicious, even for someone who doesn’t eat much meat. Rice pudding made a nice communal finale, as Masterchef would say, ‘it could have come together better as one dish’, but the sauces were straight out of a childhood sweet dream.

It was a great kick off for #eatcam14 and the atmosphere was warm, venue awesome and food playful, and for £20ish a ticket I think it was fair. Bring on the rest of EAT and hats off to my partner in crime Sian for putting it all together!
