Gin. Lab. A laboratory of gin. An invite to go and visit a den of gin – can you even imagine my excitement when this email landed in the BWC inbox? They had me at gin.
The lab is part of the Cambridge Distillery brand run by local husband and wife team, Will and Lucy Lowe. The den itself is based at The Vaults on Trinity Street and is in essence the place to go for gin tailoring, gin tastings and gin knowledge. There’s gin stills, gin flavourings to spray into your mouth to test what you like best and of course bottles of their own range of gins.
The family already includes the original Cambridge Gin, Seasonal Gin and Japanese Gin. The seasonal gin changes twice a year – from a light summer gin that lends itself to a long refreshing tonic mixer and the winter brew that resembles more of a cognac to drink – a warm hug in a bottle.
And even more importantly than all that, you can often find Darcy the black labrador. The gin lab – geddit?!
The backstory to Cambridge Distillery reads like business fairytale: Will and Lucy Lowe set up the business in 2011, were chosen to be one of Selfridges’ Meet The Makers soon after, have made gins for clients across the world (including pea gin, ant gin and truffle gin) and their gin business just rocketed from there. So much so that the wait list for tailored gin made by Will’s fair hands at their distillery now extends to March 2016. But Will and Lucy wanted to spread the gin joy further and sooner than that and that’s where the Gin Lab comes in. You can book in for tailored gin sessions at the lab from now and they will be running tasting events regularly.
Have a look at their website for more and get yourself along to the lab. Chances are you’ll see me there.
